Ramayana and Mahabharata’s Villains Still Exist in New Forms: CM Yogi at Vijayadashami Event

Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Gorakshpeethadhishwar Yogi Adityanath  drew parallels between the villains of ancient epics and present-day divisive forces, warning that society must remain vigilant against them. Addressing the coronation ceremony of Lord Shri Ram during the Vijayadashami celebrations at Mansarovar Ramlila Ground in Gorakhpur, the CM said, “Forces that divide society and threaten security have always existed in every era, but the unity of Sanatan Dharma has consistently destroyed them. The villains of the Ramayana and Mahabharata are still present today in different names and forms.”

Extending Vijayadashami greetings, Yogi Adityanath said that just as characters like Shurpanakha, Tadaka, Marich, and Subahu troubled society in ancient times, similar forces continue to create divisions on the basis of caste, untouchability, and discrimination. He remarked that those who pose threats to women and traders today could well have been followers of Duryodhana and Dushasana in previous lives.

“Vijayadashami is the festival of victory over adharma, injustice, and tyranny,” he said, describing Lord Ram’s victory over Ravana as the foundation of Ram Rajya. The CM emphasized that the ideals of Shri Ram remain eternally relevant, inspiring generations with values of justice, duty, and compassion.

Recalling the cultural impact of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan on Doordarshan in the late 1980s, he noted its unprecedented reach of over 660 million viewers, calling it the most popular show of its time. He added that the re-telecast during the COVID-19 lockdown once again proved its universal appeal. “Lord Ram continues to give society positive direction through every festival and celebration,” he said.

Yogi Adityanath also underlined that devotion to Ram and Krishna instills courage and energy even in adverse circumstances, which he termed the real strength of Sanatan Dharma. “The battle between Ram and Ravana was not confined to Treta Yuga; such conflicts between divine and demonic forces recur in every age. It is through these struggles that strength, resilience, and development emerge,” he said.

Criticizing those who question India’s heritage, he remarked, “Some people in the past, when in power, doubted the very existence of Ram and Krishna and conspired against Sanatan Dharma. But under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the last 11 years of India’s development journey reflect the vision of a New India and strengthen every citizen’s pride.”

He pointed to the government’s achievements, from housing for the poor to modern infrastructure like highways, expressways, metros, and airports, noting that India is now on the path to becoming the world’s third-largest economy by the end of the current financial year. “India is no longer a follower but a nation that leads others,” he declared.

The event was attended by BJP MP Ravi Kishan Shukla, Gorakhpur Mayor Dr. Manglesh Srivastava, Jagadguru Swami Santoshacharya from Kashi, head priest of Gorakhnath Temple Yogi Kamalnath, Mahant Ravindrasdas of Kalibari, BJP MLC and state vice president Dr. Dharmendra Singh, legislators Vipin Singh and Pradeep Shukla, along with office-bearers of the Ramlila Committee and other dignitaries.
